When the Walt Disney Studios announced that a movie based on their popular theme park attraction, the Pirates of the Caribbean, would be released, many tongues started wagging. Swashbuckling films had not enjoyed much success for many years. No one had really been able to bring the pirate world to life the way Errol Flynn had done in the 1930s and 1940s, and even the Bob Hope-style spoofs of such movies were no longer in vogue. Most people still remembered "Cutthroat Island", starring Geena Davis. Although the movie has its fans, it is nonetheless considered a complete failure in terms of generating revenues and interest in the pirate movie genre.
Nonetheless, mates, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom signed on to star as Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, accidental companions on the high seas. Keira Knightly took the role as the beautiful yet courageous Elizabeth Swann, and Geoffrey Rush became the evil but fascinating Captain Barbossa, Jack Sparrow's treacherous former first mate.
