trying to remember the name of a story

If anyone on this forum is able to help me I will be both grateful and surprised ... the latter because I have so little to go on. But if my paltry description rings a bell for anyone then please let me know ... this is something I've been trying to track down for years.
At least ten years ago, maybe twenty, I read a story (but it could have been a short novel) that was possibly by Lovecraft, but quite possibly by someone else writing in the Cthulhu universe. All I remember from this story is that a man is doing research and comes across documents relating to the Cthulhu gods. He starts to undergo a personal transformation, and describe the people around him having a negative reaction to the way he is changing. I believe the narrator in the story uses the term "positive threat" or something like that to describe the way in which people react negatively to the way he is changing ... that he has more power and is changing positively but others feel threatened.
I realize this is very little to go on ... but maybe someone has read this more recently and can point me to the author and title of this story?
Thank you!
