Talking USA Today article on Burn Notice (and Bruce!)

This was actually from a while back, when the show was getting to premiere for the summer. But lots of good quotes from Bruce, as well as background info on the evolution of the series, and discussion on why it has succeeded.

Quote:

"I'm having the best time of my life. Absolutely," says Donovan, 41. "This is the best material I've ever had to work with, and it's getting better. The cast and crew are great. It's a marriage made in heaven."
....

Burn Notice is fueled by Westen's frustrated efforts to come in from the cold — or in this case, the Miami heat. Blacklisted, he uses his spy skills in Robin Hood style, helping average Joes oppressed by evildoers ranging from drug dealers to white-collar thieves. Think A-Team meets MacGyver, mixed with a littleI Spy and Rockford Files.

Westen's crime-fighting partners are Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), the centerfold-sexy weapons expert more comfortable shouldering rocket launchers than designer handbags, and rumpled wingman Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell), a sarcastic former Navy SEAL and government operative as interested in babes and beer as bringing down bad guys.....

.......

"It's cool and hip in an almost retro way," says Campbell, 50, himself a cult-film fan favorite. "We're spies who've been through a lot of crap, but we're not bitter. And we put our necks on the line to help average little people. Bad guys do not get off, so it also gives viewers a sense of hope."

........

Anwar won her role before uttering a word of dialogue. "Her audition was the first scene in the pilot, waking an unconscious Michael," Wachtel says. "Every other actress was gentle. Gabrielle kicked in his chair."

Axe was envisioned as an older, washed-up CIA agent, but Campbell brought the role a vibrancy and charm. "They're pretty good about letting us do our own thing," Campbell says. "None of us are fresh, we've all done like 58 pilots, so there's a lot less crapping around or worrying about the wrong things, like the size of your trailer or which side you're being photographed...."
