Gore Verbinski walks the plank

Gore Verbinski who helmed the first three instalments of the Johnny Depp-starring franchise, has declined the chance to take on the next movie, which is due for release next year.

He said: "I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

No announcement on who will take over 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' has been made, but it has previously been rumoured that Johnny's long-term collaborator, Tim Burton, is set to take the helm.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear Burton rumored to be attached to this. I can't see him doing a pirate movie, but then only the first film resembled a pirate movie in any way.

I think anyone but Gore Verbinski doing it is a good idea, though. I don't think it matters much who so long as they're decent. I'm convinced the script and overall concept is what's going to make or break this movie.

Cut the budget, cut the fantasy, cut the CGI. Get an interesting actor to portray the villain, an good love interest for Captain Jack, and keep it a pirate movie with a hint of fantasy, not the other way around.

Completely agree. They also need to get the right level of humour. The first film was very funny but the follow ups got progressively less so - more action blockbusters with a bit of comic relief thrown in,

And sometimes at the best characters expense. I thought Commodore Norrington was a great character in the first movie, very much a realistic portrayal to some extents. Yet, in the second movie, he's suddenly reduced to a wretch driven only by his need for revenge against characters he had previously either admired or tolerated. Lame.
