Theoden and "how did it come to this"

Greets

In conversation with a good friend who loves LotR.
I asked about the 'Where is the horse and the rider' scene.
The power of it seems somewhat stilted in it seems he had it all worked out
and rehersed.
A long time since i read the books. 1970's.
I thought it was a quote from some middle earth poet.. But my friend says
Theoden simply composes it on the spot.
If so he is a genius.. It;'s one hell of a great piece of literary impromtu
composition.
Love his character 'Now for wrath now for ruin. And the Red dawn'

LotR i put as one of the movies i would want if i could only spend the rest of my life on an island with 3 movies.
Sean Bean and is also . fav..and faramir why the underdogs get big scores... human weakness overcome in last moments is what makes us human. Samwise the braves comment on his quality is exceptional.

I'm not a LotR fan, really, but I am I big fan of Sean Bean's. Great actor, who's had many great roles over his career.

Re: Theoden and "how did it come to this"

Theoden did not compose the poem on the spot. In the book the poem is recited by Aragorn for Gandalf, Legolas, and Gimli as they approach Edoras. He tells them it's an old Rohirric song that celebrates the coming of Eorl to Gondor's aid.

If I recall correctly, Bernard Hill suggested that he recite the poem as Bruce Hopkins (Gamling) helped him put his armor on. It is, in my opinion, one of the best scenes in "The Two Towers".

Re: Theoden and "how did it come to this"

I feel I have only lived the first 1/3 to 1/10 of my potential lifespan. May it be that I have greatly underestimated my ability to enjoy the effects of Time.
