Not a bad episode, and it begins to address some of the things people brought up regarding the adaptation of the source material. Specifically, we learn here that Richard is, or has potential to be, a wizard. Also, it was brought up that the group is split up often in the second book, and they definitely were in this episode, though Zedd has rejoined Kahlan and Cara.
I thought the invisible monster guys looked like Star Trek aliens when they were finally revealed! I'm can't think of which Trek aliens they reminded me of, but I'm almost sure there was some species very similar looking to that on TNG or Voyager. ![]() I thought they might have done a little bit of a better job with Denna's death and the aftermath, Zed's talking to her about being a better person and seems to be getting through to her. Then, ZAP!, Cara nails her with an arrow, and it's smiles all around, cause Zedd's rescued. If he was legitimately concerned with trying to 'turn' Denna, it seems like he would have had a bit more of a 'moment' there. I still haven't seen episodes 2.06 or 2.07 yet, so I don't know if they've addressed this more, but it looks like Shota's prophecy from earlier in the season is going to come true. Technically it could be said that Richard "failed" his mission, if they have to name another Seeker because Richard is off doing his wizard training on the side with Yoda on Dagobah....er, I mean with the Sisters of the Light in the Old World. ![]() Another nice costume for Kahlan, it was new to me, anyway, as far as I can remember. |

I recognized one of the"sisters"-the actress played an Amazon queen in an early episode of Xena. I have a feeling that Richard is walking into a trap and the previews of the next episode would seem to confirm this. I agree about the prophecy-it does appear to be coming to pass.

Re: 2.08 "Light" (spoilers)
Question: Who is or should I say was Denna?
I know Richard is a wizard so is a wizard born or trained in this world…or is it both. Can anyone be a wizard.

Denna was the first Mord-Sith that we ever met, back in the first season. The one who tortured Richard, in the ep called Denna.

OK, so I finally saw this one. It wasn't bad, although not any big deal. I had suspected that it was taken from the books, since it advances a lot of long-range plot potential.

Yep, they were a bit too science fiction-y for my taste - they reminded me of Sleestaks from Land of the Lost! Or the reptilian character played by Lou Gossett in Enemy Mine. Star Trek had about a thousand aliens that looked like that, but the one that comes to mind first to me is the race that communicated in metaphors in "Darmok" on TNG.I sort of liked Denna's death as being so sudden and unexpected...although you're right - seeing Zedd all upset afterwards certainly would have worked too. Yep, that's the beauty of prophesies - there can be any number of twists that are still technically true. Quote:
Yep, I was thinking the exact same thing! Do they ever explain the costume changes? Is the white robe some sort of "official" Confessor attire? And that Amazon queen was indeed NZ actress Alison Bruce, who played Queen Melosa, the Amazon queen in season 1 who gave Gab her rite of caste, but then was killed off, off-screen by Velasca in season 2. She had a recurring role on Youg Herc as Simula, one of the neighboring Amazons, and turned up on XWP again, as Talia, the lady sheriff in "Animal Attraction," and as Kahina, the desert warrior leader in season 6's "Legacy," aka the one where Gab accidentally killed the boy.

Re: 2.08 "Light" (spoilers)
What was weird about this one is it followed on from the previous ep with the gang pursuing Denna but they must have made a pit stop for Kahlan to change her costume and make up (not that I'm complaining). Tabtrett Bethel must hate that she never gets to change out of thet ridiculously tight leather costume - although I assume she'd have to be cut out of it.
Apart from that I thought it was a weak episode. The parts with Kahlan and Cara pursuing Denna were okay (although I really hope Denna isn't dead because that was a rubbish way for her to go) but Ricky teaming up with that old moan and fighting those Doctor Who rejects was tedious in the extreme. I hope this Old World plot wraps up quickly. And speaking of the Old World, why is it so similar to the Midlands? That was pretty disappointing. Am I the only one who finds Richard to be by far the least likeable of the main characters? Any episode where he's apart from the other three too long bores me a bit.

Personally I'm not complaining about Cara's tight costume! Although, I agree, you'd think they'd want a little variety given that Kahlan frequently changes hers costumes.Quote:
I can see that, yeah. Who's the culprit here, in your opinion, the writing or the actor? |

A bit of both I think. Part of the problem is the basic set up is that Richard is always carried along by what others are telling him to do. He doesn't really do anything off his own bat which makes him seem quite a weak central figure. Also he lacks any characteristic to make him stand out - Kahlan can confess people, Zedd has his magic and Cara has her incredible willpower. Sure he can fight, but then so can Kahlan and Cara. I also think Craig Horner doesn't really have a lot of screen presence. He's not a bad actor as such, but nothing about him sticks in your memory.

A few people here have remarked that they like the show, but they just aren't drawn to it as they are with others. I think you're on to the reason why that is. |
