I think it's not cold enough there to wear fur robes. The coldest month in Sofia, january: -3C. In London, afaik, subzero temperature is rare. Thus, the difference merely is 4-5C.

I'm not thinking Russia, though somewhere in the middle of Siberia would be an awesome location, I admit. I think Greenland or somewhere in Scandinavia, like Denmark or Norway.

well, bulgaria is a land-locked country. england is surrounded by warm currents. it's probably about the same temperature as...ohio. they could wear fur cloaks in the winter.

While I read the books, I was thinking somewhere in the Ukraine/Belorus region, but I'm not sure of why now.

well, they must be somewhere with lots of water right? i figured out bulgaria was on the black sea, but that's not the point. they traveled by ship, didn't mind the cold water, and Krum obviously knew how to dive.

The accents of the students and staff suggests a strong Eastern European influence. And with the climate and stetting described by Victor Krum it is most likely that Durmstrang is located in one of the Baltic Countries.

I figured it would be a city off of the Baltic Sea as north as you could get it. Maybe Finland but, for some reason, I thought they had Russain ties - mostly because of how their characters come across.

Well, according to Krum, in "vinter" they have a very short daylight. So it must be somewhere at North. Besides, the ship, so it's near to a sea or a river that flows to a sea. Krum mentioned about lakes and mountains as well. One of Scandinavian countries is likely. Not Siberia, i don't think people from Europe can bear -40-50C. On the other hand, we don't know anything about pupils from Sweden, Norwegia, Denmark, Finlandia. But we know Karkaroff(Russian??), Krum(Bulgaria), Polyakoff(Russian).

It's true, the way Krum talks sounds more Eastern European than Scandinavian...Maybe one of those little countries like Estonia.

Estonia. yeah. but nobody really knows do they? I mean, JKR didn't make it specific. there probably isn't a real location. but it has to be in the far north. they were talking about icebergs.

Krum's accent is Eastern European's 'cause he comes from Eastern Europe. What language they speak in Durmstrang we don't know.
