My LOTR quilt

Don't know if there's still anyone left around here who remembers me taking on the huge project of making a LOTR quilt (over two years ago now), but in case there is, guess what! I finally got it done! Thought I'd show it off.

If you'd like to see close ups of the individual blocks, they're all here on my webshots page

Edit: Bleah. Looks like my link broke. Let's try photobucket.

Hey, wasn't the 20 characters your restriction??

Anyway
I love that quilt! My favorite patch was the white tree of Gondor. And Frodo. You did a very nice job. *steals*

No. Not mine. It's a the forums. That is, the forum technology platform on which SF-FANDOM is based.

I understand the need for the restriction, I just don't like it.

Re: My LOTR quilt

Wow... Ebony that's amazing! Great work. My mom loves it, too (we both like to quilt, though I've only just recently started). Did you hand or machine applique, or is it that fusible stuff? It's really fantastic, I love the block with Frodo holding Sting and the phial, and the one with the eagles, and the one with the Ring inscription it gorgeous. Did you embroider it?

My mom and I are planning a LotR quilt; she's a member of a quilt guild and every year they put on a challenge. Last year's theme was Christmas, the year before that was food, etc., and this year the theme is black and white and one other color. We want to do the door to the Mines of Moria, with the lettering in elvish runes and everything (hence my question about embroidery above; however you did that it came out beautifully). I'm thinking we need to find a mottled black and gray background fabric (to look like the stone walls) and then applique the door on using white Fairy Frost (it's sparkly... but you've probably heard of that collection). It should be fun.

Again, great work! :D

Re: My LOTR quilt

Phred! So nice to see you! And so nice to hear you've taken up quilting!

First off I guess I have to explain something. Not all the blocks are mine. I got involved in an internet block swap just after ROTK came out. So I made several sets of four different blocks, and then swapped them with the other quilters. So four of the original blocks are mine, but I also made several filler blocks and the blocks used as sashing in between. My four original blocks are the purple Gollum, Frodo with the star glass, Gandalf and Pippin on the walls of Minas Tirith, and the mumak. These blocks were machine appliqued using fusible web, but the others were made using many techniques, some of which I'm not familiar with.

Anduril is hand appliqued for example, the little 'fell beasts' (mine) blocks above the witch king are paper pieced, the white tree (the one with the seven stars above it) was made with some method that made all the thread stick together but independant of the fabric beneath. In other words, you can slide your finger in behind the tree. The tree on the battleshield was put on with some kind of paint through a screen. The other Gollum, the Houses of the Healing, Destruction of the Ring and Party Tree blocks were made with a computerized embroidery machine using a digitized image. The ring inscription was hand embroidered, as well as the mallorn leaf. The 'liberated' houses beneath the Rohirrim spear are free pieced.

Your door to the mines sounds wonderful. Fairy frost is one of my favourites. The mallorn trees at the top of the quilt are done in chartreus fairy frost. I also used fairy frost for the hair in my lastest work in progress:
recognize him?

Moda makes some nice grey marbles that I've used for stone a lot but there's lots of cool stuff out there. Sounds like a trip to your LQS is in order.

If you like to quilt let me recommend my favourite quilting forum to you: Quilting at About.com. This is were I learned almost everything I know about quilting, and the people are very nice, and there always someone there who can answer just about any question you might have.

Re: My LOTR quilt

Good to see you, too!

I do recognize him; Harry Potter! I saw him when I was perusing your galleries; very nice! And the fairy frost does add a nice dimension to his hair.

Ah, I see about the block swap now. That's really cool. My mom is doing something like that with the small group of quilters she meets with on Monday nights. They start with a center block each which is passed around to the others, who in turn add a border to the center block.

It's very interesting how everyone used all those different techniques for their blocks. I think I know what you're talking about with the white tree done out of thread, but I can't remember what it's called. Coloring With Threads, or something like that... (ETA: Found it! Coloring with Thread by Ann Fahl) My mom's quilt guild is doing a workshop with it sometime this year, I think (so naturally several people already have the book and intend to have a completed project to show off at the workshop).

I'm looking forward to starting our project. I really enjoy doing applique (I'm more partial to handwork anyway, having done embroidery since I was like eleven, and sometimes my sewing machine frightens me). Now if only our LQS wasn't forty miles away. Although that may be considered a good thing....

I'll definitely be checking out that website.

Your quilt is magnificent! Your square of Gandalf and Pippin at the
