Someone must take a compelling interest in the story. But then you still need to tell an interesting story. Investors or their studio puppets make a lot of these decisions.
As a small Legion M investor I'm not happy with their heavy bias toward horror movies. They rarely make much money compared to other kinds of movies. It's a niche genre with occasional breakouts. Hence, there is less financial interest in it and I suspect the studios and investors would prefer to keep things within a formula that seems to work.
