  I have seen many ebook copies of those on google play. I think that they went out of copyright after the 14/28 year terms expired in the US. I believe that they are still in copyright in countries with Life+50 or longer arrangements.

  I could have sworn U.S. copyright extended to 70 years after the death of the author. Am I missing something? Is that based on original date of publication?

  I believe that 70 year duration only applies to works published after Jan. 1, 1978. The Norton novels and short stories in the US public domain were published and had let the copyright expire prior to that law.
  
  Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing to have some of Norton's works available for free for new readers to sample.

  I agree about sharing the books with new readers. I was just surprised to see so many of her books coming out.
  
  But now that you point out the 1978 boundary, I think you're right.

  I remember Ms. Norton extending some of the copyright on some of her works.
  
  I also believe that the earliest books were already out of copyright before her death, and republished as a collection, or similar.
  
  But we are assuming that my memory is fully caffeinated this morning. [It is not.]

  I believe that the earliest books. please remember that means 1934, have been out of Copy Right for many years.
  
  But this is 'sort of' old news.
  All of these have been reprinted since 2000 in one form or another: I think I have these on my e-reader from a $3 download from Barnes & Noble.

  I guess this is an opportunity to build up a deep fanbase around the public domain works. Fan communities of Edgar Rice Burroughs came together around his books after they became more freely available.

  Irene is correct and that is the title list of the books in the public domain.
  
  I learned from sources that I trust that in the 80s or 90s various titles were up for Copyright renewal. A disgruntled assistant was supposed to file the renewals, said they did. And yet they never renewed and all the documents that pertain to such disappeared.
  
  That's all I'm willing to say about it, except I know it to be true.
