She had a long career despite taking a break from acting. Modern fans may know her from TV shows and movies of the last couple of decades, but Piper Laurie began acting in the 1950s. Her first big role was in the 1st of 4 movies in which she co-starred with Tony Curtis. These were the days of the Hollywood machine, turning out so-called "Desert Epics" (based on stereotypes of Arabia and north African culture).
