The other day, Steve Miller posted about Andre Norton and telepathic animals. Steve wondered if Andre Norton was the first to have these.
This had me thinking of all of the animals in Andre's works: Cats, Dogs, Parrots, Falcons, Horses, Aliens that looked like cats, and fantasy creatures like the Keplians.
I my opinion there are few Norton stories/books without companions.
This also had me thinking of some of the non-telepathic animals, and off I went to read DAY OF THE NESS.
We haven't had much traffic here lately, so I propose coming up with a list of the creatures that share the "worlds" with the people.
I'll start with:
THE PRINCE COMMANDS, 1934: No telepaths, but plenty of horses, dogs and wolves. -

Daybreak 2250 AD if I recall correctly has a telepathic cat, or maybe an empathic cat? -

I ordered Daybreak, aka Star Man's Son, through Scholastic Books in 8th grade! 🤣
The hero definitely had a giant cat companion - it didn't communicate directly , but I think it sensed and responded to his commands in some special way. -

I got kind of excited by this topic, until I started trying to remember the stories that had telepathic animals. It's been many years since I read any of them, and my memory has been crappy lately. Anyway, here are the few I can quickly remember:
Beast Master series
Catseye
Falconers in Witch World (maybe I'm wrong about the telepathic link, though)
Mark of the Cat series (I remember evil mutant rats with giant brains telepathically controlling the rat hordes
I'm sure there are more, but I'll leave them for others to jump into the conversation with. -

I'm pretty sure the Falconers had a telepathic link with their birds.
I think there was a big cat in one of the Witch World stories that was intelligent (maybe someone trapped in cat form?). I don't recall if she had a telepathic capability but I think she did. -

Telepathic cats abound in the Witch World books. There's the cat Brixia takes up with in _Zarsthor's Bane_, the cat that Kelsey communes with in _Gate Of The Cat_, the guardian cats Joisan meets in _Gryphon In Glory_, the cat-turned-woman Kerovan winds up with in _Warding of the Witch World_, along with many more.

Yup. It appears that there are cats in almost every book. May be a shorter list to just find books without a cat? -

Andre herself was surrounded by cats most of her life.
When my Daughter and I visited her in 1992 I counted 5 cats but my Daughter said she counted 7. -

Does Forerunner Foray count? The main protagonist had a semi-intelligent pet that looked like an alien animal.
There's also the Star Ka'at series. These are children's books about a girl and a boy who moved to a planet where intelligent cats lived.
I also read a book about a guy who lived on the planet Korvar and worked in a shop that sold different animals as pets. He had a whole group of companion animals, including a meerkat. But I can't remember the name of the book. -

Troy Norden living in the Dipple (slum filled with war refugees) of the planet Korwar gets hired to work with animals at Kyfer's where 'animals' are for sale. But some of these animals can think and plan, and somehow Troy can hear them. -
