They're only mentioned in the Appendices (and one comment from Treebeard).I would have loved to have seen, however brief, Dain Ironfoot standing above the body of King Brand in the Battle of Dale, wielding his axe much like his cousin Thorin had once done. Knowing that he was doomed, but defiant nonetheless.
They would have had to cut away from the main action of the movie to show what was going on in Lorien, and I think they decided they had already split the story enough.

I'm not sure if Warner Brothers could do that, or if they've reverted to Middle-earth Enterprises, but whomever has those rights should be giving serious consideration to developing the stories in the appendices.I just want to thank you for pointing out the difficulties/challenges in turning a book into a movie. The mediums are different. Not all stories can be converted from book to movie exactly as the people who read the books imagined. In fact, I am not sure that any can.
They've already screwed any hope of compatibility with the books (and, again, I don't blame Peter for that - he just didn't have all the rights he needed). So I say, "Go for it!" Give us more fan fiction!
