That's almost like a Hayao Miyazaki plot. Never having watched the movie, I don't have an opinion on whether it would do better as live action. But it's never been clear to me why some of these stories catch on with large audiences and some don't. Maybe it is all just about execution.

The movie is very good. I would recommend it. I thought I had a written a response on this question already, but I don't see it here. Either way, I preferred the version of the story I was given. I would probably watch another interpretation, but I don't know that it was the medium that determined the success of the film.
