Andre Norton Forumcontinuity problems in Warding? |
|
Posted by hank greely on April 14, 1997 at 11:29:11: I just read The Warding of the Witch World after recently reading The Magestone. I haven't read all the Witch World books, but I have read the first five Tregarth books, the Day of the Unicorn, The Gryphon's Eryie, all three of the latest trilogy, and one or two others. As I read The Warding, I kept wondering if I had missed something. In the Warding, the mage stone was referred to as controlling all the gates and as having vanished, or been destroyed, in a battle between a white and dark mage. In the Magestone, the stone seems to have been Elsenar's own (although he found it and tuned it to himself), to have had nothing to do with the multiple gate of the adepts of the light, and to have been withdrawn along with Elsenar when he went off in search of the rest of himself. Did I miss something? There were some other problems in reconciling The Magestone with The Warding, including numerous changes in spelling (although the Warding itself uses "Denner" in the prologue and "Denener" (or something similar -- I don't have the text before me) in the text) and the absence in The Warding of the young dark mage Skurlock, mentioned as the upcoming threat at the end of the Magestone. More generally, the time line seems strained somewhere in the last books. At times, the Turning seems to have been only three or four years ago; on the other hand, unless he is a remarkably precocious lad (and there may be some such explanation in a book I haven't read), the existence of an adult son of Kyllan and Dahaun implies that we are twenty years or more after the Turning. I don't mean to be overly critical. I thought The Warding had many good points and I enjoyed it thoroughly. But I was left wondering whether I had missed some intervening stories or whether there were some real problems of continuity between it and The Magestone. Any thoughts? Hank Greely
