: : Hello, I've just recently come across this site and I've found it very interesting that there are enough people to keep a site going dedicated to Andre Norton's Witch World series. I'd like to throw in a comment of my own on the opening location of the first Witch World novel. According to my copy of the book (Ace paperback, dated 1963) Simon starts out his adventure on the contintent of North America, probably somewhere on the eastern seaboard of the United States. On pages 9 and 10 of my copy, Jorge Petronius initiates this conversation: : : "We head downtown, but not to the harbor, My clients travel, but not by sea, air, or land. How much do you know of the traditions of your fatherland, Colonel?" : : "Matacham, Pennsylvania has no traditions I ever heard of-" : : "I am not concerned with a crude mining town ON THIS CONTINENT [emphasis added]..." : : This indicates the action is taking place in North America, and by implication, from the reference to the harbor, on the east coast of the US. : : Gordon : First, I want to say good reading! That's really interesting . . . I'll have to go check it out and, given that insight, see if there are any other clues. A grimy industrial city in North America with a harbor covers a lot of territory, including not only the eastern (and western) seaboard but the Great Lakes -- could the series have started in Cleveland! : Second, it took me a long time to notice this follow-up. It was nested in a thread about five screens down on the message board. This seems to me to be a problem with the structure of this board (at least as it appears on my machine). I'd rather have things show up in straight chronological order so I could easily tell what I had and hadn't read. When I read a posting, it turns from blue to red on my screen, but then seems to reset to blue after a month. : Is there someway I can change my netscape preferences to change this or is there some easy fix that Michael can make? : Hank Greely : PS I'm down to three unread WW books - The Crystal Gryphon, 'Ware Hawk, and (the non-Norton) Four for the Witch World. I'm eager to buy reading copies of any of them from any of you. : Hank Greely Dear Hank and Gordon Very interesting item from Gordon about ON THIS CONTINENT. I missed this comment from Gordon as well. With regards to Cleveland, the following appears in the introduction to Roger Schlobin's bibliography of Andre Norton: Ms. Norton's writing career began while she was attending Collingswood High School in Cleveland, Ohio. I am sure we all hope our benefactor Michael Martinez has made a full recovery from his travels and I hope that the "lurkers" who read this site will make themselves known. Richard
