: ---- Thanks Michael... : I have another ethical question for you. : Me and one of my friends are making a science fiction cookbook : where we include recipes on how to cook alien species. : Gryphons are there (excluding Crystal Gryphons). : Is this an unethical link in your idea?

I'm not sure I follow you. Do you mean you took the gryphon image from another site? People lift images from other sites all the time. It's generally considered polite to ask a Webmaster for permission to use something from their site, unless they give explicit permission for anyone to take them.

There are some very talented graphics artists who have provided free clip art for the Web. You should be able to find them by using a search engine like Yahoo! or Alta Vista and looking for "Free clip art" or "clip art". I would definitely not take something from a commercial Web site an artist's Web site without their permission, unless it's an image you are confident is used on many Web sites.

BTW -- an attorney who works with copyright law recently sent me email discussing some of the cases that have been of concern to me. He said the case against Total News, the company that was framing other companies' content (thus bypassing ads on those companies' main pages) was settled out-of-court and therefore has no legal weight. It will require another lawsuit before the courts decide if that practice is wrong.

He also said that, in his opinion, the Ticketmaster versus Microsoft case was probably weak. Ticketmaster is suing Microsoft (in part) for bypassing main links. However, this attorney was careful to warn me that the selection of judge in any case dealing with Internet Law is extremely critical. A judge who does not understand the technology and its applications may not rule in ways that will preserve this online culture.

At any rate, for now, the only issues I know of that concern me are that a certain movie studio is pressuring someone I know who runs a fannish Web site to toe the line in some fashion. The Webmaster has not disclosed any specific details to me but so far isn't being sued.

Okay, don't worry. I doubt you'll be getting into trouble any time soon. As Andre Norton Web sites go, mine seems to be the most well-known for now, and I don't think I'm doing anything I need to worry about.
