: No they will not have the same value as a book actually held in the author's hand and signed. Yes some book sellers would do that to inflate the value Actually there is a collector/publisher that got signed plates from Andre Norton for his own collection. These particular books are usually priced at the same level as a 'signed' book. {Gerald de la something-or-other) In general having a signed book is prefered. But how many of us are able to fly to Tennessee to visit Andre Norton & then Fly to Los Angeles to visit Sherwood Smith & then to Maryland to visit A.C.Crispin & then to New York to visit P.M.Griffin? I have posted books to Sherwood Smith for signing - but that was only two books, and fairly recent publications. Sometimes the only way to get books signed by people that don't attend conventions near you is to mail them "plates" and then put the signed plates in your books. A book with a signed plate is better than a book without a signature. BECAUSE, Andre Norton doesn't sign that many books, plates or letters. I sure wish I had SOMETHING that I could have had Phylis Miller sign, way back in 1992, when she made a surprise showing at an Andre Norton signing session! [Note: I make photocopied plates - so I don't paste them into the books, I Mylar bag them and then 'lay' them into the book, usually tucked into the dust jacket protector.]
