THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY, VOLUME 2: WHO'S WHO, M-Z, compiled by Donald H Tuck (Advent, 1978 - covers thru '68) lists SARGASSO as first out from Gnome Press in 1955.

Incidentally, I have the first Ace Double edition which has the cover or spine typo of "Sagasso of Space."

STAR MAN'S SON is listed as 1952 and STAR RANGERS as 1953 and THE STARS ARE OURS as 1954.

STAR RANGERS in Ace Double form (1955) as THE LAST PLANET is the first Norton I read. I was 14 in 1955 and still have a soft spot in my heart for it.

I tend to believe that it was Andre's first interstellar story from the text. Andre had her Star Rangers from major suns like Polaris (not sure of the others without digging out my copy).

It is doubtful that the brighter suns could have inhabited planets, being too young. In Andre's later interstellar tales, she doesn't use the names of familar stars, but makes up her own.

I was uncomfortable with the Can Hound (I'm unsure of the spelling). Treatment seemed a bit racist, something Andre doesn't do. EYE OF THE MONSTER was the only other slip-up like that in all her books.

I don't think that STAR RANGERS is as polished as the rest either. But it's my first love and I still enjoy it.

For those of you who care, I'm the Rick Brooks that wrote "Andre Norton: Loss of Faith" that appeared in THE MANY WORLDS / THE BOOK OF ANDRE NORTON.

That article originally appeared in THE DIPPLE CHRONICLE and was uncopyrighted. So the editor reprinted it without my knowledge or I would have updated it.

Probably for free, if asked.
