: : Can you determine it it came out before December of 1991? That would make it the first edition of that title....

: : Robert Garcia, ed. Chilled to the Bone, Niles, IL: Mayfair Games, 1991 [paper].

: Irene, the copyright page is identical to the paper edition on the back of the paper is that number 1091660MFG995 and on the hardcover the back flap has a number 1091660HMFG2000. Does that mean anything to you or help determine what came out when??

Ah the joys of deciphering the copy right information. I don't have my copy at hand, and will check when I get home. Clues: The copy right pages in the paper & hard cover are identical. Only stuff on the covers are different.

Guess: The two editions were published at the same time, just bound and priced differently.

Reasoning? ISBN numbers are different ONLY on the covers. The 995 and 2000 that follow the 1091660HMF are probably the prices with $9.95 and $20.00. The publisher is Mayfair Games/Berkley, so the MF in that mysterious line is probably for MayFair.

Counter clue: I have $13 in my insurance records for what the book cost. Maybe I had it shipped? That would explain $3 for shipping.

The Lesson: It is a pretty common thing for a small publishing house to print both Hard Cover and Paper editions at the same time. I know that WildSide press does this. MOST publishers bind a few special copies of a book. This is done at ACE, CheapStreet, Grant, NESFA and a few other places I just cannot remember right now. Often the major difference is just the binding, or providing a box. Sometimes these special editions have a signatuare page tipped in. (Tipped in: When a single page is glued into a book, on the tip end.)
