Andre Norton ForumTime to re-read Sea Siege |
|
Posted by Irene Harrison on February 18, 2000 at 08:02:29: About a month ago we started a trail of "You've been sucked into the world of the Beastmaster (Movie/TV) There was a comment: "A G.I. from from the 1957 novel "Sea Siege." An M-14 I didn't remember any G.I.'s, and was gently reminded that it was time to re-read the book. Well, I needed a carry-along reading book for this coming weekend, so I started to re-read Sea Siege. I suggest that everyone on the message board re-read this book. Then we can have a discussion of it. The worry here is nuclear, WW III and the "reds". There is a young man living with his father, being refused to apply for Air Force training. An island culture mixing with the few outsiders having a major invasion of friendly forces (US Navy) which curtail the movements of the locals. [Removing a freedom that they didn't realize they had until it is taken away.] There is conflict is with Nature (red algae) and then with man. There is also the mystery of the missing ships. So far the closest thing in the book (first few chapters) to a "G.I." is a "Seabee", and my mind considers them to be like today's Navy "Seals". So, unless the marines or army land in later chapters, the only military are Navy.
