The term "canon" actually dates back to Middle Age Bible
scholarship. It's first/main modern use was/is by Sherlock
Holmes "fandom." I've also seen and heard this problem discussed
elsewhere. You need, in my not so humble opinion, to do "levels"
of the stuff:
Level A is either entirely written by Andre Norton or as a FULL
collaborator.
Level B is a story in one of her universes and she has the editor.
Level C is the new stuff where she's just let someone use her
universe but the author has gone off on her own, e.g., Sherwood
Smith's version of the trader spaceship series.
