: I hope that I didn't confuse anyone

: Serpent's Tooth is about a reptile creature, who's species spends their time searching the desert. In this post-apocolypse world they have gained a reputation as guides. Our hero is hired to guide a small party of searchers. The difference is that the leader of the party has 'a map'. The goal is a 'lost' city. Well not really lost, the impression is that there was only one survivor of the last expedition - the horse that the leader rides.

Thanks for all the info. I agree with you, it is a favorite story of mine. At the time I purchased it (#123/975) I had to convince myself I should spend that much on a 52 page story. When I saw it was about a lizard people I was sold. I thought it was going to be about the Zacathans whom I find the most fascinating of all the species created by Ms Norton. Of course it turned out not to be about them but still a wonderful story and I never regretted my purchase.
