A person new to science fiction asked the Lois McMaster Bujold mailing list for recommendations this week. Patricia C. Wrede, the fantasy author is also on the list; I herewith quote her comment on one such recommendation. I thought you'd be interested to see some of Andre's impact on the field.

>And the root of all modern female sf/fantasy authors is CL Moore.

I think maybe you mean the forerunner or precursor, not the root.
Because if you talk to women writers of my generation and just
before -- the ones who moved into SF/F in the 70s and 80s -- you will hear Andre Norton mentioned as a formative influence *far* more often than C.L. Moore, or even Judith Merrill. Moore's stuff is good, and Jirel is probably the very first swordswoman in modern fantasy, but I don't think she had a widespread enough influence to call her the "root."

Everyone is welcome to subscribe to the Andre Norton mailing list [see Kevin Stahl's previous post on the subject] for more discussion of good stuff. Kevin, has anyone asked Andre to subscribe to the list? Lois McMaster Bujold refers to email as "fan mail she doesn't have to answer." Perhaps Andre would be interested.
