: The spacefaring civilization seems (to me) to be peculiar to Andre, however. I really cannot recall anything like it in all the science fiction books I've read. There have been plenty of "Mankind went to the stars" type of books, even where they forget where they came from (such as Asimov's FOUNDATION books), but none that I know of where the galactic civilization -- dominated by humans and peopled with strange alien races beside them -- was preceded by yet ANOTHER, far more ancient galactic civilization that somehow died out.You know, I never thought of that...other universes with a long-vanished forerunner race. I've read some that are similar in some respects, but nothing quite like it. I wonder if that is why I like it so much? I'll have to glance at my library and see if I can find something close. Zahn's Spinnerette is the only one I can pull out of memory, although it isn't even close to being Human-dominated. Quite the opposite. Come to think of it, couldn't you say the Witch World is similar to the Lady's Galactic Millieu? Long-vanished civilizations (the Adepts and their contemporaries), with the current ones trying to use the bits and pieces that have been found to reconstruct and use the knowledge that has been lost....?
