: It was about a man that was an outcast in his (futuristic) world, got tried for being a 'heretic' mid way through the book only to discover that he was deliberately conned into thinking he was an outcast by the powers that be, to prepare him for an important role. Can't remember the title at all but I'm sure it was a Norton book. Does anyone know the book I mean??? *** While I can't think of any ONE Andre Norton book with that theme there are several. The hard part is being tried for being a 'heretic'. The whole premis might fit Judgement on Janus. The one trial of a heretic occurs in ORDEAL IN OTHERWHERE of the female daughter of the Education officer. Night of Masks and Star Hunter include "set up jobs" of outcasts from the dipple, though neither ends up with a trial. Scarface includes a major 'set up' but isn't a future society (young man raised by pirates & tried as one) A few of the other books incllude a young Outcase finding his true destiny. One of those is in Secret of the Lost Race and another is Stand and Deliver (historical fiction). I guess you'll just have to visit your local library, or used book shop and scan through all of these titles.
