: The worry here is nuclear, WW III and the "reds". There is a young man living with his father, being refused to apply for Air Force training. An island culture mixing with the few outsiders having a major invasion of friendly forces (US Navy) which curtail the movements of the locals. [Removing a freedom that they didn't realize they had until it is taken away.] : There is conflict is with Nature (red algae) and then with man. There is also the mystery of the missing ships. : So far the closest thing in the book (first few chapters) to a "G.I." is a "Seabee", and my mind considers them to be like today's Navy "Seals". So, unless the marines or army land in later chapters, the only military are Navy. You need to be "real" careful here Irene.... Seals and SeaBees are very different. Seabees are combat engineers and construction crews, which is why AN chose them to be building a secret base on a remote island. I believe their motto goes something like this, "..the improbable we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer. Seals have flippers and smell like fish....even in uniform and of course the Russian navy is going to show up soon...
