: I know Andre Norton wrote it, and I know I loved it when I read it as a kid. The only scene I remember now is at the beginning as the hero is boarding a ship to go off-world to some planet he'd never been before. What sticks in my mind is that his race had short grey fur, and was looked down upon for it.

: :Try Secret of the Lost Race.. 1959. main character gets scooped up in raid on a bar and sent to world called Fenris. He was a half breed from an marriage between a [correction- irh]terrian [man] and Ffallian [female].

: : Eet in the ZERO STONE, is described that way. An inheritance from his mother, the ship's cat. By UNCHARTED STARS, Eet is fully grown, and attempts to pilot their spaceship, though (s)he is about the size of a very small child.

I'm going to run my fingers down the title list & try to remember a character with fur that gets onto a spaceship - My sugestion is to read all of the these & try to figure out which matches the original request. I guess the idea is for all of us to go and re-read all of these titles until we find the right one.

BREED TO COME - A race of augmented cats (and dogs etc), but I'm not sure if any get onto the space ship.

EXILES OF THE STARS - No: the heroine is a small animal

I better re-read EYE OF THE MONSTER - cause I cannot remember it.

FLIGHT IN YIKTOR - but with a 1986 publication date - not likely: hero is Green skinned & hunchback.

FORERUNNER - heroine has Black skin & White hair, hero is Asian.

IRON CAGE - Hero is human, but everyone else has fur.

JARGOON PARD - No space ships, but lots of fur.

LAST PLANET ==re-titled from STAR RANGERS - Maybe this one. The hero has striped hair and everyone goes to a planet that they have never been to. Several 'races' of humans & non-humans populate this book.

LORE OF THE WITCH WORLD "Changeling" 1980 I think this is about the Moss child (Torr). They have short grey fur (like fog) but no spaceships.

"Teddi" never gets onto a space ship. The furred creatures live on the new planet that the children are taken to.

QUAG KEEP - scales, no fur & no spaceships

SERPENT'S TOOTH - scales & no spaceships

STAR KA'AT - The main characters are human children, but the cats fly the spaceship.

WERE-WRATH - fur but no spaceship.
STAR GUARD - I can't remember - time to re-read this.
X FACTOR - can't remember - time to re-read
