The SCENT OF MAGIC is one of the 5 senses series. I liked HANDS OF LYR, but found MIRROR OF DESTINY to be just 'pretty good'. Then again, I really loved SCENT OF MAGIC. I guess this is what makes a horse race. I didn't notice any of the the flaws that you mention. However, I didn't like WIND IN THE STONE. I found the two generation jump, annoying. I think that the concept of 5 senses was being stretched to the limit here. [I privately call this book "the sound of magic" and worry about how magic will taste.]
