Would that be the one I want? James White did write a book called 'Star Surgeon'. It is part of his Sector General series - a series of medical science fiction stories. However, the book I was referring to was indeed by Alan E. Nourse. It was reprinted by Ace Science Fiction in 1986 so you might try a second hand book store.
