I saw an interesting item yesterday. It was a collection of items from a Lovecraft newsletter called "The Conservative." The seller of the item had posted the following excerpt as proof of Lovecraft's racism: [Here is a small excerpt concerning WWI: "But though the sober philosopher perceives in war a phenomenon eminently natural and absolutely inevitable; tough he realises that the masses of mankind must remain subject to the will of a dominant aristocracy so long as the present structure of the human brain endures; he can non the less find in the colossal conflict an ample cause for the deepest regret and the gravest apprehension. High above such national crimes as the Serbian plots against Austria or the German disregard of Belgian neutrality, high above such sad matters as the destruction of innocent lives and property, looms the supremest of all crimes, an offense not only against conventional morality but against Nature itself; the violation of race."] I don't know the context of the excerpt at this time, but it does sound at the very minimum like a rally cry for racial seperatism. I grew up in the South, and still live in the South. My parents and grandparents have always held beliefs which I regard as racist, and the idea of racial mixing is still strongly frowned upon all over this nation. I don't like my parent's racial beliefs, but I still love my parents. Likewise, I don't want to advocate the racist ideas of a writer even though I do love many of his works. I admit that I need to do more research on this subject, and that I've often heard that there were bitter disputes among literary scholars as to whether Lovecraft was or was not racist. Joshi points out that he married a Jewish woman as a strong indication that his racism is overstated. I need to read more of his non-fiction to get an idea. I haven't seen strong indications of racism as I understand it within his published horror. Anybody out there have any comments or info?
