: I don't think Kevin Costner would make a convincing Aragorn, but he might do very well as Faramir. KC just doesn't have the magnetism for the King (think about that Robin Hood debacle), but could pull off the sort of kindness necessary for Faramir.Yeah, maybe... And I definitely wouldn't cast Richard Gere (two words: "First Knight.") : Personal pick for Saruman: Sam Neill, even though he normally plays a protagonist. Interesting idea...I also think Jeremy Irons might make a good Saruman--he certainly has the voice for it. : For Butterbur, Brian Blessed--- although he might also make a good Boromir. I can't imagine Brian Blessed as Boromir. (He'd be great as Butterbur, though!) How about Angus MacFadyen for Boromir? : Sean Connery for Theoden. The universal suggestion...can't say that I disagree. : Kenneth Branagh for Eomer. Yay! Kenneth Branagh! : Elrond? Hmmm. Patrick Stewart here, I think. Actually, I think I'd cast Patrick Stewart as Denethor--either Stewart, or Paul Scofield. (Someone on another discussion board suggested Morgan Freeman for Denethor, another idea I like.) How about Ben Kingsley as Elrond? : And Gandalf? Well, I'm really going out on a limb here, but I'd like James Earl Jones to take that on! (Just imagine his deep bass rolling out the inscription on the inside of the Ring in the scene of The Council of Elrond!) Cool idea! Also, I could imagine Derek Jacobi as Gandalf... A few more suggestions: Emma Thompson as Galadriel, and Helena Bonham Carter as Arwen. (Maybe I should get out my tape of Branagh's "Henry V"...we've already got half the principal cast here...) : The real trick, of course, is figuring out who will be Legolas, Gimli, and the hobbits, not to mention Treebeard! Right. (I could imagine, say, Leo DiCaprio getting cast as Legolas, but I think that would be icky.) Actually, I heard rumors that the hobbits and such might be CGIs, an idea I don't like--I keep having mental images of the Dancing Baby...
