A while ago I got into a debate about whether the Secret Fire Gandalf speaks of in Moria is the Flame that Eru used to create the Ainur or the Elvish ring Narya. I think it is absolutley the Flame Imperishable. First of all why would a Maia be a servant of an Elvish ring as Gandalf says he is to the Secret Fire. Second of all what type of threat is it to a Balrog. He's been in Moria since before the rings were made and the ring has no power of war. The Flame Imperishable is a "holy" device in which Eru created the Ainur. I believe it gives the creations of Illuvatar free will but thats another debate altogether. Comments appreciated Jon
