I am currently rereading the Lord of the Rings yet again, when I stumbled over this. In the Road to Isengard, Pippen (or Merry) says that Tobold Oldbuck (or somebody) discovered pipe weed in 1070 Third Age. That's right around when the Istari showed up so I was wondering if Gandalf may have been the one who gave pipe weed or spurred the idea of using it to smoke with the hobbits. I think it is a possiblity since Gandalf is interested in smoking and the Shire. Also in the Silmarillion it says Gandalf frequently gave ideas to the elves without anyone else ever finding out. What do you people think?Jon
