Very interesting thought. I, however, feel that it was the Hobbits who brought it to the rest of Middle Earth, and Gandalf ended up being the one who spread the "secret" to the rest of the West. The Shire was Gandalf's specialty, while the rest of the Istari focused on other things, and he took a sagistic approach to their culture, traditions, calendar, etc.
