I'll write a few things of interest found in Peoples of Middle-earth about the IYthrin Luin. First of all it says they most likely came early in the Second Age opposed to Saruman, Radagast, and Gandalf coming around 1000 of the Third Age. The job of the Blue Wizards was to

"circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men who had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir up rebellion... and after his first fall to search out his hiding (in which they failed) and to cause [?dissension and disarray] among the dark East."

He goes on to say they had a profound effect on all the events during their stay because they limited Sauron's resources in the East, which would have outnumbered the West had they not been there.

You should read this because it explains a great deal about other subjects like Glorfindel and Círdan, as well as a chapter of an abadon sequel to the Lord of the Rings.
