: I must admit, I was alway s uncomfortable with the way Bombadil saved their asses, TWICE. Once is OK, but not twice. I dislike it when characters keep getting saved by luck, instead of by their own wits.

Actually, that makes me think: what's wrong with the Hobbits saving THEMSELVES? All they would have to do would be to find a crack in the wall and escape (with the swords, of course.) It wouldn't be a particularly drastic change to the original story, since the essence of the encounter would remain the same. And it would make the Hobbits more believably self-sufficient.

But you gotta have the barrow-downs, if only because of the kick-ass visuals.
