: Actually, that makes me think: what's wrong with the Hobbits saving THEMSELVES? All they would have to do would be to find a crack in the wall and escape (with the swords, of course.) It wouldn't be a particularly drastic change to the original story, since the essence of the encounter would remain the same. And it would make the Hobbits more believably self-sufficient.I considered this option, and it might be a tolerable modification of the story. But I don't mind having others save the hobbit's bacon a few times in FOTR and The Two Towers because it allows for the development Tolkien traces in their character through the story. It gives a contrast between their seemingly helpless nature at the beginning of the story and their more determined, world-wise and confident bearing at the end. Not that the ent-draughts didn't hurt either. :-) : But you gotta have the barrow-downs, if only because of the kick-ass visuals. Yes. The more I consider it, the more I'd hate to lose the Barrow Downs. If you've seen Peter's films, you know he could do wonders with the bony hand crawling toward the unconscious hobbits, for example. And so on.
