This Apocalyptic battle is certainly in keeping with Tolkien's ideas. He based LOTR, etc. heavily on Norse mythology, and Norse mythology foretells a battle that ends the world, called Ragnarok. It sweeps away the old world and a new and better world remains in its place.If you remember that Tolkien was creating a sort of "new mythology", it makes sense that he would wrap it up with the end of the world. That's usually a feature of mythos which contain tragedy and sorrow, like The Silmarillion.
