Good call, Oberon. The chapter in Unfinished Tales is wonderful: both beautifully written and extremely revealing. I wish that those passages had been included in the original. They are the kind of "calm after the storm" that makes Tolkien so enjoyable. They give you pause to reflect on the true nature of Gandalf; they give you a glimpse into his awesome power (and the extraordinary chain of events leading to the discovery and destruction of the Ring), without having to be painfully explicit or pedantic.
