: Are you sure? In 'A Tolkien Bestiary' by David Day, the chronology states that the Eagles were created before the Ents were conceived & awakened. "Behold! When the Children awake, then the thought of Yavanna will awake also, and it will summon spirits from afar, and they will go among the _kelvar_ and the _olvar_, and some will dwell therein, and be held in reverence, and their just anger shall be feared. ... That also shall come to be by the heed of Iluvatar, and before the Children awake there shall go forth with wings like the win the Eagles of the Lords of the West."
-- Quenta Silmarillion Chapter 2. This passage seems to imply that Eagles were indeed created before Ents ("before the Children awake" vs. "when the Children awake"), but not that they were conceived earlier.
