There is no way that I can see how Sauron would have had access to the ring's powers while not wearing it, that is why he so desired it. When he forged the ring he let some of his power flow into it, which was necessary to dominate the other rings. The problem he faced now was if he ever lost the ring, he would lose much of the power that he used to have. He probably never expected that to ever happen, to lose the ring.Sauron was so powerful without the ring because he was a Maia, what you could think of as a lesser god. The Vala and Maia were devine and possessed more power then any of the races of middle earth. As the story told though, it seemed to be fact that Sauron needed his full former power in order to completely dominate Middle-Earth in one swift stroke. With out the ring though, he was attempting to conquer Middle-Earth on a more lesser scale using his armies. My main reason for this belief though is the attitude of any of the Eldar that came across the One Ring. Whenever Frodo came along with the One Ring of Power, to Elrond, Galadriel, etc. they did not wish to see it or possess it. The ring was so powerful and evil that they were afraid it would corrupt them, and they would become great in power, but also evil and just another Dark Lord or Lady. This is also what Sauron feared, and he would be wasted if it happened. How could Sauron be overthrown by a Dark Lord using his own ring if he still had it's powers? He didn't have it's powers. The only time I can remember any of the great ones held Frodo's ring was Gandalf... and he to was a Maia so perhaps he resisted, and Tom Bombadil, and we don't know what he is, but seemingly devine as well. -Silvane
