: Thanks for any replies .....Don't have my books here but I think I remember the Dwarves cowering when Eru found Aule at his work, suggesting sentinence. They were put back under to keep to Eru's plan. Yavanna was worried about her creations so Eru made guardians (Ents) for her. They must have had some awareness all along, achieving full sentinence when Men started cutting down trees. Bombadil was always meant to be a mystery that couldn't be explained. My opinion is that Tolkien conceived of him as being outside Eru's control and creation, maybe something that came from Middle-Earth itself.
