First of all I have to say that I'm not a tolkien novice I have read,most of his works. I feel that one of his best works was the fall of Gondolin in the Book of Lost Tales. Although not included in full in The Silmarillion it makes for a good read.
The heroics of Tuor,Ecthelion and Glorfindel, and the deviation of Maeglin, are written brilliantly.
