: I feel that one of his best works was the fall of Gondolin in the Book of Lost Tales. Although not included in full in The Silmarillion it makes for a good read.
: The heroics of Tuor,Ecthelion and Glorfindel, and the deviation of Maeglin, are written brilliantly.I agree completely, "The Fall of Gondolin" is definately the best part of the BoLT. Of all the tales Tolkien left unfinished I think the Fall of Gondolin story in _Unfinished Tales_ is the best. It is nothing short of criminal to leave a story like that unfinished.
