Tolkien discussed the thought of Glorfindel being one of the five Istari. In The Peoples of Middle-earth, he quickly dismisses the theory, but the fact remains it was considered, thus hinting that Glorfindel was truly strong.

Glorfindel was said to have returned to Middle-earth to aid Elrond in the fight against Sauron. If this is so, he must have been very mighty.

And Elves that were reincarnted were said to have full recollection of their past life (unlike reincarnation in a Hindu sense). This made them far wiser than an average elf, and most likely more powerful.
