Sorry for being late on this one, but I couldn't let it lie.I don't believe Frodo is the true hero. I believe that Sam is, and I reckon Tolkien thought so too. Some have said that Sam Pippin and Merry were in it out of thirst for adventure. Maybe Merry and Pippin were, but Sam certainly wasn't. Also, he is the only one who gave up the Ring without being under great duress (as Bilbo was). He did it out of love. A very heroic feature. He carried Frodo across Mordor, fought off Gollum, broke the power of the Silent Watchers, dared to enter the Tower where Frodo was being kept, etc. He didn't expect to come back from Mount Doom eventually but kept on going regardless to complete HIS mission. He is the plainest talking, most straight forward character, and the one of the only ones who really completes his mission. (I believe that Faramir, Aragorn and Gandalf do too by the way) And in the end he has the last word in the LORD OF THE RINGS, a literary device which I don't think Tolkien put in by Mistake. In the end, it was his journey that was really followed from beginning to end. I hope I have presented my case satisfactorily. Cheers PS I hope I haven't broken any unwritten codes by going back to a previous subject. If I have don't hesitate to tell me loudly.
