Suppose Gollum died at the hands of the orcs or of starvation just before Mt. Doom. Frodo struggles to the Cracks of Doom and claims the ring as his own. At that point, Sauron quailed & called the Nazgul back, and Gandalf headed there on an eagle. Gandalf would have arrived before the Nazgul (let's suppose), and has a couple minutes before they arrive. What would he do? Could he see Frodo? What happens to Sam? Could Gandalf, now the White Rider, get the ring from Frodo (with or without the finger!) and could he then himself have thrown the ring into the fire? If he had to kill Frodo, would he have? Could Frodo command Sam? Could Frodo command Gandalf or the Nazgul? Such possibilities! Have at it!-Steve S.
