: : Suppose Gollum died at the hands of the orcs or of starvation just before Mt. Doom. Frodo struggles to the Cracks of Doom and claims the ring as his own. At that point, Sauron quailed & called the Nazgul back, and Gandalf headed there on an eagle. Gandalf would have arrived before the Nazgul (let's suppose), and has a couple minutes before they arrive. What would he do? Could he see Frodo? What happens to Sam? Could Gandalf, now the White Rider, get the ring from Frodo (with or without the finger!) and could he then himself have thrown the ring into the fire? If he had to kill Frodo, would he have? Could Frodo command Sam? Could Frodo command Gandalf or the Nazgul? Such possibilities! Have at it!: : -Steve S. : I beleive Gandalf could have took the Ring from Frodo, in the Fellowship of the Ring, Galdriel states that the Ring only magnifies your own inate power. Gandalf being the White-Rider and with the aid of Narya he could take the Ring. Heres a question though why couldnt Frodo see Narya on Gandalf's finger, or Vilya on Elronds??? My memory is certainly not the perfect reference, but I seem to recall that Frodo didn't see the ring on Galadriel's finger untill the seen at the mirror, implying that he only saw it because she willed him to see it. Also, as I recall, Frodo never wore the ring in the presence of another ring wearer (excepting the Nazgul, which for this purpose, don't count). It wouldn't seem to me that just having the ring in his possesion would have enabled him to see things only visible in the "unseen" world. Just my cent-and-a-half Turgon
