: : : Suppose Gollum died at the hands of the orcs or of starvation just before Mt. Doom. Frodo struggles to the Cracks of Doom and claims the ring as his own. At that point, Sauron quailed & called the Nazgul back, and Gandalf headed there on an eagle. Gandalf would have arrived before the Nazgul (let's suppose), and has a couple minutes before they arrive. What would he do? Could he see Frodo? What happens to Sam? Could Gandalf, now the White Rider, get the ring from Frodo (with or without the finger!) and could he then himself have thrown the ring into the fire? If he had to kill Frodo, would he have? Could Frodo command Sam? Could Frodo command Gandalf or the Nazgul? Such possibilities! Have at it!: : : -Steve S. I believe Frodo could not see the Three because he did not try to. He did not know they were there, so had no reason to look, however, as Galdriel says, the Three cannot be hidden from the bearer of the One. As for the original question I don't know if Gandalf could have taken it from Frodo, but I'm sure Gandalf would have made sure the Ring ended up in the Fire. If that meant killing Frodo, certainly he would have done it. That's obvious, it's either Frodo dies or the whole world AND Frodo die. Gandalf may have been able to see Frodo. That would explain how Gandalf knew Bilbo had a ring, almost as soon as he got it, way back in Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire, in the Hobbit. Frodo may have been able to command the Nazgul, but it's doubtful. They show no fear of him at any time. It's unlikely he had the power. If he did have the power than I guess he would controll them, since he was the master of the One. I am nearly positive though that he could not control Gandalf. Gandalf is a rival of Sauron. Though Sauron is most probably more powerful than Gandalf, Gandalf would provide a tough match even for the likes of Sauron. It's unlikely a Hobbit, even with the Ring could conquer such a powerful Maiar as Gandalf. Jon
